Counsel will serve late in order to give you insufficient time to respond to their documents. I had a conference brief served so late that I had to serve mine before theirs. This was done in order to prevent me knowing what orders they were seeking at the conference.

Judges are ever forgiving with lawyers for serving late but very hard on self reps under similar situations.
